Last night I had the wonderful opportunity to see the band Songs of Water at Eddies Attack in Atlanta. The first time I heard their music was at a special house show they played at the Helser’s house for our 18″ Journey class. I remember being in awe of the percussion and being gripped by the strings of each guitar and violin and hammered dulcimer. Last night was just as inspirational.
As we prepared to leave for the concert I tore a sheet of paper out of my Moleskine journal and grabbed a Pilot G-2. It was random, but I thought there was a possibility I would be inspired to write something at some point throughout the concert.
I’m glad I brought the pen and paper because throughout the night, at random points throughout different songs, verses for a spoken word would come to me. Many times Inspiration sneaks into a room and if you’re not prepared, you’ll miss the opportunity to capture what it is she’s saying.
So here is what I managed to capture last night as Songs of Water was filling the atmosphere with righteous percussion and heavenly melodies…
The title came later, and I borrowed it from one of their album names. You’ll find that it suits it well:
The Sea Has Spoken
there’s a greater level of freedom to be had
let go of the ropes, stop clinging to the pier, it’s time to get outta here
leave fear behind and take it to a place far from here
it’s time, lets go
to the deeper waters far from the shore
no more mediocrity or even striving for excellence, leave behind all performance
there’s no space for it within the boundaries of these waters
these waters named freedom and crazy hope
the waves are high, your boat won’t make it so learn to fly
when the board pieces explode on by your face from the waters crushing the deck
don’t stand in regret, but leap forth to the new freedom
the sky the waves the water the air, explore
cause it’s round 2 so get back in the ring
more fight to be had more courage to bring
so sing out loud and let your voice be heard
the clouds look grim but when you bring your song dark clouds retreat
so meet, eye to eye, the maker of the skies and the wind and the rain
take courage in knowing your Best Friend’s going
with you to the depths and heights
the Holy Spirit is here
the Holy Spirit is here
the Holy Spirit is here!
Let everything that has breath praise the LORD!
beauty is found in submission
t to the r-u-s-t spells it out
it’s all about safety found in trust
danger found in us
the rust on our bones breaks away when we make our way
to the depths of the sea
it’s you and me and him and her and she and me and they are coming
to join the quiet revolution
a whisper is missed in a sea of loud voices
but go where few dare and the clarity of sounds will renew your path
don’t shy away when danger becomes your home
it’s fear that dies and doubt that’s cast away
stay within the borders of love and find the only pure comfort zone
hone in on the moment it’s present not past
the future is nothing more than a die that’s cast
so with open arms receive, believe for goodness
perceive and would this perception conceive a newness
fresh wind in sails
a brand new tale
a story of glory.
